For a film that had the best writing, in our opinions is a film that was poetic and heart-breaking, at times. The ending monologue by the lead actor, when he realizes that his closeted lover was finally able to come out after his death, is the tear-jerking highlight of the film and sealed the deal for this jury. The award for Best Screenplay award goes to OLIVIER PEYON for his exquisite French film Lie With Me.

Sometimes an actor’s performance blurs the lines of reality and acting. When that happens it’s a magical thing to behold! For a heart breaking performance takes us into an unknown & unfamiliar world, a world far removed from most of us, and yet one that resonates deeply on a human level through the sheer power of her acting; by her every gesture and look which speaks of having actually lived the life she is enacting, and this gives her performance a searing honesty and authenticity that is a treat to behold; the Narrative Jury is proud to present the Best Performance in a Lead Role to KIKA SENA in the Brazilian film Paloma.

Love is universal, yet the right to marriage is discriminatory. For portraying the epic struggle that is waged in and out of courtrooms, taking us to street protests and into the private lives of LGBTQI+ people, hand in hand with the flag-bearers of the movement and for highlighting the persistent activism and lobbying with parliamentarians; in this brave feature where the filmmaker holds up the lens to our society while turning the gaze within with an unflinching honesty that is endearing; for its message of hope, the Documentary Jury presents the Special Jury Mention to the film from Czech Republic: THE LAW OF LOVE, directed by Barbora Chalupová.

For a film that tickles us with its disarmingly self-deprecating humour and gently holding the mirror to show that even those who swear by the seven colours are sometimes stuck in binaries of black and white; for its visualisation, stop motion animation, script, voice, music and direction that only an auteur can lend with such fluidity, the Documentary Jury would like to make a special jury mention to the German/Israeli animated short BI THE WAY, directed by Amir Ovadia Steklov.

                                    International Narrative Short

The narrative jury is delighted to give a special mention in the international narrative shorts category to the Jordanian short film OUR MALES and FEMALES by Ahmad Alyaseer.
