KASHISH TAKES INDIAN QUEER FILMS AROUND THE WORLD
While there are over four dozen films on LGBTQ subjects being made in India every year – shorts, documentaries and features – most of them do not have much possibility to reach audiences since they are made on shoe-string budgets and there is no distribution platform available to showcase them. Apart from the screening at KASHISH and other Indian queer film festivals, these films do not find means to reach out widely.
KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival has since its founding in 2010 been facilitating programming of a dozen Indian LGBTQ films handpicked from its festival to tour film festivals around the world.
Over the years more than 120 screenings of Indian LGBT films have been facilitated at more than 55 film festivals.
Between May 2014 – February 2015, KASHISH facilitated screening of Indian LGBT films from its 2014 edition at following film festivals
- Cinema Queer (Sweden)
- Chicago South Asian Film Festival (USA)
- Iris Prize Festival, Cardiff, Wales (UK)
- Prague Bollywood Festival (Czech Republic)
- Fusion at the Lowry (UK)
- Glitch – Queer People of Colour Film Festival (Canada)
- Gay Film Nights (Romania)
- Q Film Festival (Indonesia)
- Homochrom, (Germany)
The films that were selected by the festivals to screen were ‘Mitraa’, ‘Will This Change’, ‘Between Dreams & Waking’, ‘I’dentity’, ‘Because’, ‘Purple Skies, ‘Just Two Steps Away’. KASHISH has obtained screening rights for festivals for these films.
