FILMMAKER IN FOCUS: JIM HUBBARD

Jim Hubbard is a New York based filmmaker and AIDS activist who has a long history of filmmaking and activism that has made a global mark. He has been making films since 1974 and has an accomplished repertoire of over 19 films including Elegy in the Streets (1989), Two Marches (1991), The Dance (1992) and Memento Mori (1995). These have been shown at several film festivals as well as the Museum of Modern Art.

In 1987 he co-founded, alongwith Sarah Schulman, the New York Lesbian and Gay Experimental Film Festival, which is now is in its twenty-sixth year and has been renamed New York Queer Experimental Film Festival. Having been an integral part of ACT UP (the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) for several years, Jim also created the AIDS Activist Video Collection at the New York Public Library. Since 2001, Jim Hubbard alongwith producer Sarah Sculman have been working on the ACT UP Oral History Project. Out of these exhaustive video interviews of ACT UP oral history project, Jim created an engaging story of how a small group of men and women spread across different races and classes, came together to change the world and save each others lives. This is the documentary film United in Anger that has already become a forceful movement by itself

United in Anger: A History of ACT UP

Formed In 1987, AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) is an International direct action advocacy group working to impact the lives of people with AIDS and ultimately bring an end to the disease by mitigating loss of health and lives.

United In Anger combines startling archival footage putting the audience on the ground with activists, and interviews from the ACT UP Oral History Project, to explore how a small group of men and women across races, classes and sexualities came together to change the world and save each other’s lives.

The film takes the viewer through the planning and execution of exhilarating major actions, including, Seize Control of the FDA, Stop the Church, and Day of Desperation, with a timeline of many of the other zaps and actions that forced the US government and mainstream media to deal with the AIDS crisis. United In Anger reveals the group’s complex culture – meetings, affinity groups and approaches to civil disobedience mingle with profound grief, sexiness and the incredible energy of ACT UP.

This year the conversation with KASHISH 2013 Filmmaker in Focus Jim Hubbard, reputed filmmaker and activist from New York, centers around the works of the filmmaker, his inspiration, acclaim, outreach of his films.
