Critic reviews
Todd Haynes’s 50s-set drama in which Blanchett’s divorcing woman falls for Rooney Mara’s doe-eyed shop assistant is an intoxicating triumph.
Peter Bradshaw·The Guardian
The images in Carol are cool and elusive, but they also pulsate with life.
A. O. Scott·New York Times
“Carol” takes place in the early 1950s, when love between two women still dared not speak its name.
Ann Hornaday·Washington Post
The fine screenplay is by Phyllis Nagy, who drains away the sourness of the book; what remains is a production of clean and frictionless beauty, down to the last, strokable inch of clothing and skin.
Anthony Lane·The New Yorker
Haynes’ commitment to outcasts, then and now, makes Carol a romantic spellbinder that cuts deep.
Peter Travers·Rolling Stone
Mara and Blanchett make for an unforgettable couple in a beautiful film about longing, loss and the confusion and wonder of love.
Nev Pierce·Empire

Starring: Cate Blanchett and Roony Mara
Carol follows two women from strikingly different backgrounds who find themselves in an unexpected love affair in 1950s New York. Therese Belivet, is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol, an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens. As conventional norms of the time challenge their undeniable attraction, an honest story emerges to reveal the resilience of the heart in the face of change. The film is based on Patricia Highsmith’s seminal romance novel The Price of Salt.
Carol was nominated in six categories at the 88th Academy Awards (Oscars), in five categories at the Golden Globes and in nine categories at the BAFTA Awards.
