FILMS IN COMPETITION: INTERNATIONAL NARRATIVE SHORT

International narrative short films completed after January 1, 2014 and having their Indian Premier at KASHISH 2015 compete for this award. It carries a trophy and a gift hamper.

1) 09:55-11:05, INGRID EKMAN BERGSGATAN 4B

Director: Cristine Berglund, Sophie Vukovic / 2014 / 15 min / Sweden
67 year old Ingrid has decided to deal with cancer on her own. She retreats from the outside world and it retreats from her – apart from sporadic visits from the home care services.

2) ALONE WITH PEOPLE

Director: Drew Van Steenbergen / 2014 / 25 Min / USA
Inspired by Quinn Marcus’s one-woman show Chasing Ballerinas, Alone with People follows Andie in Georgia. Too afraid to confide in anyone close to her, Andie seeks the help of a therapist to come out to her family and friends in this hilarious and touching coming-of-age tale.

3) BLOOD, RICE AND TEARS (Blut, Reis Und Tränen)

Tim works as a taxi driver, which gives him enough flexibility to take care of his father who suffers from Alzheimer. Yet he has to divide his time between taking care of his father and his lover Lee, and this often annoys Lee. To make matters worse, Tim’s sister Inka accidentally lets the father escape from home. Tim realizes he has to change his attitude if he wants both his father and Lee to stay part of his life.

4) CHANCE

After passing away of his wife, Trevor’s life has become avoid. He slowly finds himself isolated and alone. A chance encounter in the park with a stranger, who is equally troubled by his own past, jarringly reawakens him; and forces both men to once again start to live.

Set in the future, Code Academy offers a peek into the inner world of adolescence, gender identity formation and the role of cyber space in this tumultuous time of growth.

6) COMING HOME (回家)

Director: Steven Liang / 2014 / 14 min / Taiwan, USA
Jie Cheng takes a road trip down the most dangerous highway in Taiwan with rebellious Eric. Their trip is cut short when Eric reveals that he will soon return to his country, forcing Jie Cheng to confront his darkest demons.

A father frets over his daughter as she chooses to dress and express as a boy and wants to go out to experience the colorful nightlife of East London.

8) THE DECISION (DE BESLISSING)

After receiving a text message on his phone, Karim pays a visit to his father for Eid but something keeps playing heavily on his mind. Finally he is forced to make a decision that will change the course of his life.

9) ÉDEN

João and Pedro live in Eden. What João wants the most is happiness for Pedro, and the only way he can make that happen is to help him in his escape with Sara. On the other hand, Pedro has learned the true love João has for him, and does not want to leave the garden.

Late at night two ageing strangers fail to obtain the blue pill for a one night stand. The lack of the desired pill turns out to be a blessing in disguise as the two strangers get to understand that a warm heart is much better than a warm body.

Two young men are alone at a self-service laundry. They are sitting next to each other, waiting in silence. An old framed embroidery of a young deer is hanging against the wall across them.

12) FORCED CONTACT (Contatto Forzato)

World War II has just come to an end. Italian Lieutenant Antonio Graziani is being falsely accused of having ordered the execution of ten civilians. The only person will be able to clear him from the accusation is a German soldier who was captured along with him by the partisans, during the days of the massacre.

Anabel invites Hanna, to see her new apartment with the hope of getting her back in her life, but Hanna wants to confront Anabel about a rumor that she has heard.

The annual dinner commemorating the death of Cornelius, revives Samuel’s memories. Tormented by regret and misunderstood by all, Samuel becomes a Queen of the Night, in tribute to his lost love.

A woman who had suffered a disappointment was strolling, not knowing what to do, and suddenly she decides to go to the cinema.

16) LONGING (Eishech, Teshukatech)

Director: Nadav Mishali / 2014 / 20 min / Israel
As every month, Michal dips herself in the Mikveh as part of a religious ritual that allows her to have closeness with her husband. But when the long-awaited night arrives, nothing happens between the two. Her husband’s absence, as well as the deterioration in the intimacy between them, evokes her suspicions about his true identity.

17) NOTES FROM THERE

Pepca and Martine are lovers and dance collaborators torn apart by the immigration arrest of Martine. They must learn to be there, no matter where that is.

18) SAINT (Santa)

Director: Carlos Vilaro Nadal / 2014 / 20 min / Argentina
One Sunday after Mass, Paula discovers her daughter Lourdes kissing her best friend, in her room. True to her beliefs, Paula will try to heal Lourdes’ queerness, exposing her to situations that are increasingly difficult to bear. Lourdes must choose between the love of Agostina and the love of God, which also involves the love of her mother.

19) SQUARED

Tate finds himself in a position he has never experienced before. From a wrestling match to hurling racist comments – Tate did all to emasculate his counterpart Wally; but in vain, as Wally posses a much sorted mind than him.

20) STEALTH

Director: Bennett Lasseter / 2014 / 22 min / USA
The heartwarming story of a brave, transgender Sammy who was born as a boy but is now living in stealth, as a girl, with the support of her mother and a doctor. During a ‘truth & dare’ game with her friends Sammy reveals to them her secret in confidence. When the threat of a betrayal arises, Sammy must decide whether to run, or to live as her true self.
