KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival is South Asia’s and India’s biggest and only mainstream LGBT film festival. To organize your favourite festival, and against much odds bring you the best of world class LGBT themed films we need generous contributions from those can support it.
KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival 2014
KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival pioneers as the biggest gay & lesbian film festival in India and South Asia. It is the only queer film fest to be held at a mainstream venue; and was the first LGBT festival to receive clearance from India's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
The 5th edition of KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival will be held May 21-25, 2014 at one of Mumbai's iconic theatres - Liberty Cinema and May 22-24, 2014 at Alliance Française de Bombay in South Mumbai.
The theme for KASHISH 2014 is DARE TO DREAM, recognizing the progressive movements for equality and dignity for gay, lesbian and transgender persons across the world. KASHISH 2014 will highlight, reflect upon and celebrate the people, communities and movements that ‘Dare To Dream’.
The festival attracts LGBT persons from India and abroad, their families and friends, allies, the crème da la crème from the field of art, literature, theater and Bollywood as well as mainstream audiences.
Why are we looking for sponsors and crowd funding?
The festival is a not-for-profit event, primarily community driven.
With no government support and very little corporate sponsor support, we rely heavily on individuals, organizations and communities to make the festival happen.
The recent Indian Supreme Court's decision to re-criminalize homosexuality has also been a severe setback for the LGBT rights movement - section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (and versions of the law in other countries in South Asia) says that same sex relationships can be punished with up to 10 years in prison.
KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival stands firmly with the global outrage against section 377 and will work with queer and civil rights organisations to advocate for LGBT rights through screenings and discussions at mainstream platforms.
Why should you believe in us?
KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival pioneers as the biggest queer film festival in India and South Asia focusing on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender themed films. It is the only queer film fest to be held at a mainstream venue - one of Mumbai's top multiplexes; and is the only queer film festival to receive clearance from India's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Since its debut in 2010, over the past four years the festival has grown bigger, bolder and queerer; bringing world-class queer cinema not only to LGBT audiences, but also a sizeable (around 30%) mainstream audience. The festival programs 100-130 films from 25-35 countries and has attracted around 6500 seat occupancy every year.
KASHISH has today become one of the important annual events in Mumbai's cultural calendar. Recently it was voted as one of World's Top 5 Coolest LGBT Film Festival.
How will the money be used?
Organizing the festival in a mainstream venue, so that the festival audience can see LGBT themed films on the big screen in a multiplex environment and having an international festival experience, involves several cost heads.
We hope to raise a substantial amount of the budget from corporates, donor organizations, community businesses and discounted services & facilities by those who believe in the vision and mission of the festival.
We believe in community action – and when we say community we mean the LGBT community, and the larger social community who believe in human rights, social justice, equality and dignity.
We need to raise money to cover a part of festival expenses, including:
* Venue costs,
* Opening and Closing Night ceremonies
* Trophies and Awards
* Hotel (film makers)
* Printing and stationery
* Promotional materials
Everyone is welcome to contribute, to help us organize this festival that offers everyone a better understanding about LGBTQ people, their issues, their pain and problems, their joys and victories; not only in India but across the world.
